Tree Stump Solutions: Cutting weight not performance

When your largest stump grinder weighs nearly 1000kg, every residential job becomes harder to manage. For Dave Williams, it wasn’t just about upgrading power, it was about finding a machine that handled better on delicate surfaces and tighter spaces.

As owner of Tree Stump Solutions, serving customers across Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire since 2011, Dave knew the wrong equipment choice could lead to unnecessary complications and added costs across his residential job sites.

From frustration to flexibility

When Dave Williams needed to replace his largest stump grinder in early 2025, the requirements were clear: it had to be powerful, compact, and easy to transport. His previous machine, weighing close to 1000kg, handled large jobs well, but its bulk caused ongoing issues, particularly when navigating residential sites.

“I needed something that was easier to move but without compromising on performance,” Dave explains. “You don’t want to be dragging unnecessary weight over someone’s paving.”

Having relied on his FSI B20 pedestrian stump grinder for over five years without major maintenance issues — a machine he describes as “outstanding” Dave didn’t hesitate when FSI launched their higher-power FSI B31-980 model.

“The FSI B20 has been absolutely outstanding for smaller jobs,” Dave explains. “So when I heard FSI was launching a higher horsepower version of their narrow B31 model, it immediately caught my attention.”

The FSI B31-980 combined the same compact footprint as the FSI B31-749 with a powerful 38hp engine and for Dave, it ticked every box.

“The size and shape were ideal, and once I knew it came with 38hp, I didn’t hesitate,” he explains. Dave took delivery of the B31-980 from DJB Machinery in March 2025 and put it straight to work.

Exceeding expectations from day one

At just 680kg, the FSI B31-980 is over 300kg lighter than the machine it replaced — a change that’s had a clear effect on how Dave works. 

“It’s a very well-balanced machine with a lot of processing power for a stump grinder of its size,” Dave reports. “The machine this replaced weighed close to 1000kg. This FSI B31-980 comes in at 680kg, which makes a huge difference when transporting it to site and exerts far less downward pressure when manoeuvring over customer patios and gardens.”

The compact design and lower ground pressure give Dave more confidence on site, particularly when working around decorative paving, soft landscaping, or newly laid lawns.
