Strong repeat demand and low downtime reinforce the decision to add FSI stump grinders to the fleet

For Hodgson Tool Hire Ltd, investing in new hire equipment means balancing reliability, ease of operation, and long-term durability. The family-run independent hire company operates from depots in Burscough and Ainsdale in the Northwest of England, with a growing focus on arboriculture machinery and specialist equipment.

When the business decided to expand its stump grinder range, the team added FSI B21 and FSI B31-980 models to the fleet.

According to Callum Hodgson, Manager at Hodgson Tool Hire, the decision was shaped by years of hands-on workshop experience servicing different stump grinder brands.

Beyond engineering quality, brand reputation played an important commercial role. “Brand recognition for us was a big factor,” says Callum. “The professionals know FSI, and if they see we have it, that opens a door to new clients.”

Practical features have also made a difference. The lifting eye design immediately improved loading procedures for the team. “Stump grinders of all manufacture are heavy machines, and our team now use the lifting eye to load and unload into trucks,” Callum says. The pivot point on the B21 and swing-out control panel on the B31 are also regularly appreciated by customers.

Customer feedback validates the choice

Since adding the FSI stump grinders to the fleet, customer response has been consistently positive.

“One of the biggest types of feedback we receive from customers is around the overall power and smoothness of the machines,” Callum explains. “Customers regularly comment on how productive the grinders are compared to other machines they’ve previously used.”

The straightforward controls mean operators feel confident using them quickly, even if they haven’t used an FSI before.

That feedback has translated directly into repeat business. “We’ve seen very strong repeat business from customers who have used the FSI stump grinders. Once customers try them, they tend to specifically request the FSI stump grinders again for future jobs,” Callum says.

The company has seen this preference play out clearly, with professional customers actively requesting FSI and often declining when only an older competitor machine is available, underscoring how brand recognition directly influences hire demand in the professional market.

Workshop perspective

From a workshop perspective, reliability and servicing access have helped keep the machines available for hire.

“Reliability has been excellent so far, which is critical in the hire industry where downtime directly impacts both ourselves and our customers,” Callum explains. “Maintenance access and servicing are very straightforward, which helps our workshop team keep the machines operating efficiently. Overall, the low downtime and strong customer demand have made them a very positive investment for us.”

The addition of the FSI stump grinders has strengthened Hodgson Tool Hire’s position within the arborist and tree surgery sector, attracting professional users looking for dependable, high-performance equipment.
